ORD 30991 - Landmark Designation - Brandeis-Millard House ORDINANCE NO. 3 C./ 9 c AN ORDINANCE to designate the Brandeis-Millard House, located at 500 South 38th Street, and the Brandeis-Millard carriage house, located at 3815 Dewey Avenue, as a Landmark pursuant to the Landmark Preservation Ordinance of the City of Omaha. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: Section 1. That the Brandeis-Millard House is located at 500 South 38th Street and the Brandeis-Millard carriage house is located at 3815 Dewey Avenue, which is on the following described land, to wit: The North 112.5 feet of the East 160 feet of Lot 1, Block 3, West Omaha, an Addition to the City of Omaha, as surveyed, platted and recorded in Douglas County, Nebraska, together with the West 5 feet of Lot 1 and the West 5 feet of the North 33 feet of Lot 4 and the North 120 feet of the East 67 feet and the East 65 feet of the South 67 feet of Lot 2 and the North 33 feet of the East 82.5 feet of Lot 3, Block 3, West Omaha, an Addition to the City of Omaha, as surveyed, platted and recorded in Douglas County, Nebraska. Section 2. That for the reasons recited in Landmarks Heritage Preservation Commission Resolution attached hereto as Exhibit I, and made a part hereof as if fully set forth herein, the architectural characteristics of the Brandeis-Millard House and the Brandeis-Millard carriage house are hereby deemed significant and worthy of preservation. Section 3. That the "Secretary of Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings", as may be from time to time amended, are hereby adopted as the design standards to be applied in the enforcement of this Ordinance and Chapter 24, Article II of the Omaha Municipal Code. That the Brandeis-Millard House and the Brandeis-Millard carriage house are hereby designated pursuant to Section 24-61 of the Omaha Municipal Code, and hereby subject to all of the provisions of Landmark Heritage Preservation, Ch. 24, Art. II of the City of Omaha. Section 5. That this Ordinance shall be in full force and take effect fifteen (15) days from and after the date of its passage. Millard, a pioneer Onahan who held prominent business and political positions; and. WHEREAS, the Brandeis-Millard House was designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn, internationally famous for his modern industrial designs, and, WHEREAS, the Brandeis-Millard House is an early and fine product of the Jaccuethan Revival style of architecture in Nebraska and is the only known residential work of Albert Kahn in the state, and, WHEREAS, the Brandeis-Millard House is listed in the National Register of Historic Places; and, WHEREAS, the Brandeis-Millard carriage house was designed to match the Brandeis- Millard House in material, color detail and style, and is an important element of the Brandeis-Millard House and site, and, WHEREAS, this case application and supporting data are attached hereto as exhibits, and incorporated herein by this reference. NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LANDMARKS HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION OF IRE CITY OF OMAHA. THAT, the Brandeis-Millard House, 500 South 38th Street, and the Brandeis-Millard carriage house, 3815 Dewey Avenue, be designated as a Landmark of the City of Omaha.
