ORD 30797 - Landmark Designation - Saunders School H1-85-8 ORDINANCE NO. SW/7 AN ORDINANCE to designate the Saunders School, located at 415 North 41st Avenue as a Landmark pursuant to the Landmark Preservation Ordinance of the City of Omaha. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: Section 1. That the Saunders School is located at 415 North 41st Avenue, which is on the following described land, to wit: Lots 10 through 14, Block 18, Poppleton Park, as surveyed, platted and recorded in Douglas County, Nebraska. Section 2. That for the reasons recited in Landmarks Heritage Preservation Commission Resolution attached hereto as Exhibit I, and made a part hereof as if fully set forth herein, the architectural characteristics of \Y� ® the Saunders School are hereby deemed significant and worthy of preservation. Section 3. That the "Secretary of Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings", as may be from time to time amended, are hereby adopted as the design standards to be applied in the enforcement of this Ordinance and Chapter 24, Article II of the Omaha Municipal Code. Section 4. That the Saunders School, including only the original 1899 structure, is hereby designated pursuant to Section 24-61 of the Omaha Municipal Code, and hereby subject to all of the provisions of Landmark Heritage Preservation, Ch. 24, Art. Rumbaugh is the owner of the Saunders School; and, WHEREAS, this owner, on April 12, 1985, requested that Saunders School be designated as a Landmark under the City of Onaha's Landmarks Heritage Preoer- vation Commission; and, WHEREAS, Saunders, School, built in 1899, has served the community as a public school facility for more than 80 years and stands as an example of late 19th century schoolhouse design, and, WHEREAS, Saunders School was designed by Omaha architect John Latenser, Sr. , who served as School Board staff architect and is credited with planning more than 35 schools during his prolific career, and, WHEREAS, Saunders School is an early example of Latenser's interest in neo-classical form and detail, an architectural style that would characterize his later commissions for many of the City's important civic and commercial buildings; and, WHEREAS, Saunders School, commemorates the achievements of Alvin Saunders, Territorial Governor, U.S. Senator and prominent School Board member; and, WHEREAS, this case application and supporting data are attached hereto as exhibits, and incorporated herein by this reference.
