Alonzo grew up on 40th and Pratt where he began playing basketball at a young age. "Coach Mitch," as many called him, was a longtime youth basketball coach and mentor. He founded the Unity Stars, a youth basketball organization, where he strived to teach young men, not only about basketball, but about life. He promoted hard work and discipline, especially when it came to education. He would often visit his players at their respective schools and would not allow them to play if they were not earning good grades. "Mitch" mentored young individuals outside of basketball as well. He spent the last ten years of his life working as a juvenile services specialist with the Douglas County Juvenile Assessment Center. Mitchell unfortunately passed away in August of 2018. This commemorative designation would honor Coach Mitchell in front of his family's auto detailing business on North 30th Street from Pratt Street to Spaulding Street. WHEREAS, the Planning Director and the City Councilmember representing the district in which the item proposed is located have recommended that said permit be granted pursuant to the application, a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit "A" and made a part hereof by this reference. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: THAT, that the nomination of"Alonzo `Mitch' Mitchell Street" as a commemorative street name on 30th Street from Pratt Street to Spaulding Street is hereby approved; and the Public Works Department is authorized to erect the acceptable sign(s)therefore, in compliance with all applicable local and state statutes, ordinances or regulations, and policies with all costs to be borne by the applicant.
