RES 2023-1022 - Joslyn Way Commemorative Street City Clerk Office Use Only: 27)--io Publication Date(if ap licabl ): RESOLUTION NO. ) �] Agenda Date: % 1 I Department: (/tilnio Submitter: �J 4 CITY OF OMAHA LEGISLATIVE CHAMBER Omaha, Nebraska RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: WHEREAS, it has been determined that it is in the best interest of the City of Omaha to provide for commemorative street names; and, WHEREAS, a nomination has been submitted for the designation of"Joslyn Way" as a commemorative street name on Davenport Street from 40th Street to 38th Avenue; and, WHEREAS, George and Sarah Joslyn were residents of Omaha who built a newspaper empire. As their fortune grew, George and Sarah became the community's first philanthropists and gave publicly to local institutions including: Omaha University, YWCA, Child Saving Institute, Fontenelle Old People's Home, the Visiting Nurse Association, the Omaha Community Playhouse, the Nebraska Humane Society, the Hattie B. Munroe Home, the Red Cross, the Omaha Social Settlement, and The Salvation Army. Joslyn Castle & Gardens serves as a physical reminder of the immense philanthropic legacies of its original residents. WHEREAS, the Planning Director and the City Councilmember representing the district in which the item proposed is located have recommended that said permit be granted pursuant to the application, a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit "A" and made a part hereof by this reference. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: THAT, that the nomination of "Joslyn Way" as a commemorative street name on Davenport Street from 40th Street to 38th Avenue is hereby approved; and the Public Works Department is authorized to erect the acceptable sign(s) therefore, in compliance with all applicable local and state statutes, ordinances or regulations, and policies with all costs to be borne by the applicant. Their actions— included meeting with criminal justice representatives to discuss reform measures and providing financial support for _ families impacted by incarceration. Lastly,within Omaha,the Joslyns(often anonymously)issued social and financial — assistance to individuals and organizations who requested needs-based aid. Outside of Omaha,the Joslyns also supported The Piney Woods Country Life School (a co-educational independent and historic African American boarding school for grades 9-12 in Piney Woods, Mississippi). Further, Sarah Joslyn participated in the Women's Suffrage movement and raised resources for wounded warriors and victims of global — genocide in the aftermath of the First World War.
