Eure Pastor October 24, 2008 Dear Councilman, Frank Brown Per our conversation several months ago, concerning the naming of a street after my mother, Dorothy Eure As you know, my mother, Dorothy Eure was one of the original community activist in Omaha She worked throughout her fife to better conditions for those who are of a minority race, those who are oppressed, and those who are impoverished She spent a lifetime working for the civil and human rights of all people Dorothy Eure was a pioneer in the civil right struggles from the early 1940's to the dime of her death in July of 1993 My mom walked in the March on Washington in 1963, and she marched in the Poor People's Campaign in Washington, D C after the death of Dr Martin Luther King Dorothy Eure marched in Omaha for equality at Peony Park (she was arrested), she marched for open fair housing laws, for the desegregation of the Omaha Public Schools She walked the streets of Omaha with Fr John Marko (Creighton University), State Senator, Edward Danner, Senator Ernie Chambers, she went to jail for demonstrating against the unfair treatment of minorities who appeared before the Omaha City Council Dorothy Eure, was on the Board of Directors of the Tomorrow's World (which she was a founder while still in high school), the 4CL, the NAACP, Urban League of Nebraska, National Council of Negro Women, Black Women Unlimited, Head Start, Florence Mills Neighborhood Association, the Afro-Academy of Dramatic Arts, The Great Plains Black Museum Dorothy Eure worked for over 25 years for the Legal Aid Society as a Paralegal Specialist She was specialist in Social Security matters noted by judges and attorneys of the Omaha Bar Association Mrs Eure even worked to change the laws on mental health commitment procedures and worked to win the release of men and women unjustly prisoned My mother found great joy in helping needy and impoverished families She created and organized an Annual Christmas Party for children starting in her home She began buying Christmas gifts for families (using her own money) Dorothy would buy toys and other gifts all year The Christmas Party she started grew to having over 500 kids and their parents coming to the North Omaha Christ Child Center for this once in the year celebration Dorothy Eure is a native of Omaha. born on December 27th, 1926 A life long resident of North Omaha Life long, active member of Zion Baptist Church She was married for 50 years to our father, Albert Eure Sr The Eure Family continue to live and are proud residence of North Omaha would be very honored to have a street in North Omaha, named in Honor of our mother, Dorothy J.
