INFORMATION ATTACHED: YES X NO NONE AVAILABLE LBL/th c: Councilmembers • Marty Bilek, Mayor's Office James Thele, Planning Director Buster Brown, City Clerk Council Staff RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: WHEREAS, historic Omaha Union Station located at 801 South 10th Street opened in 1931 as a showpiece of the Union Pacific Railroad in the city of their headquarters featuring classic art deco architecture and serving as an important rail station for 40 years; and, WHEREAS, the City of Omaha is the owner of the historic Omaha Union Station; and, WHEREAS, the city leases historic Omaha Union Station to the Durham Museum; and, WHEREAS, the Durham Museum has as its mission to collect, preserve, interpret and exhibit historical and cultural artifacts relating to the history and development of our nation's western regions; and, WHEREAS, historic Omaha Union Station has already achieved local landmark status and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and, NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: THAT, the City of Omaha supports and endorses efforts by the Durham Museum in collaboration with the National Park Service to seek National Historic Landmark status for historic Omaha Union Station. C ?sA CITY OF OMAHA LEGISLATIVE CHAMBER Omaha, Nebraska RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: WHEREAS, Omaha Union Station, located at 801 South 10th Street, opened in 1931 as a showpiece for the Union Pacific Railroad headquarters presence in Omaha; served as an important rail station for over 40 years and is one of the best examples of Egyptian-influenced Art Deco architecture in the nation; and, WHEREAS, the City of Omaha is the owner of Omaha Union Station; and, WHEREAS, the City of Omaha leases Omaha Union Station to the Durham Museum; and, WHEREAS, Omaha Union Station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and designated as a Local Landmark in 1978; and, WHEREAS, Omaha Union Station has been identified as a significant building worthy of recognition as a National Historic Landmark; and, WHEREAS, the Secretary of the Interior cannot designate a property as a National Historic Landmark if the owner objects to such designation; and, WHEREAS, the City of Omaha and the Durham Museum supports and endorses an application for designation of Omaha Union Station as a National Historic Landmark. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: THAT, the City of Omaha supports, endorses and approves a nomination by the Durham Museum, in cooperation with the National Park Service, of Omaha Union Station for designation as a National Historic Landmark.
