Internship at baileys counseling since 2015 of December to current V Statement of interest As I started to type this statement; I reflected on my upbringings in life and asked myself "how can I be an effective change or member on this board". As a young boy growing up on 32nd and Hamilton; I got to experience the life of living in a pretty decent house, and later moving from there and staying in Logan fontanelle housing projects. I remember the good times and the bad, which consisted of people who truly cared for their surroundings, and those that only seen it as a dump to drop all their personal problems, waste, or illegal actions on others. The passion my mother Ruthie Mae Britt Abraham had to help others started early. When she graduated from tech high school she became a nurse at Saint Joseph hospital then at Immanuel hospital. During that time my mother wanted to help individuals with their living situations, and felt people that demonstrate a drive to become successful, should be given a chance at living in better surroundings. Knowing she would have to live in different parts of the city with her two young children to be a model for being a good resident, while receiving housing assistance, caused us to attend many different schools and have diverse friendships. This was the beginnings of the residential commissioner position. Established to give a voice for the individuals receiving assistance for housing which has now grew to a well versed position. Watching my mother as a child help people is what helped me establish my goals. They goes as follows: 1. "Helping individuals receive all benefits they are entitled to"; finding a better way to get the right information to the public has always been a challenge. I feel that with proper publication in certain areas it would help the ones with transportation issues and limiting physical conditions to access that information. 2. "Understanding the various substance abuse problems and mental health issues that plague individuals that need housing"; I have an associate degree in chemical dependency counseling/human services from metro community college, and currently working on my bachelor's degree in behavioral science at Bellevue University. Growing up around a lot of the issues that are faced in the public housing system gives me a unique vantage point to help focus more on certain issues. 3. "Making sure that everyone eligible under the current guidelines get fair housing treatment and opportunities". As a person that has experienced many different holes in the system; it sometimes deters people to have confidence in services provided. Being able to create a better system to help those wanting services is important. Being qualified in this positions should mean that you are well versed in different areas. I currently have a housing choice voucher and participating in the home ownership program. I also work for the Siena Francis house, and hope I'm giving the opportunity to help individuals by finish the job my mother started thank you for this opportunity.
