Uta Halee girls come from diverse circumstances and backgrounds. THE CHILD • sexually abused • physically abused • severely neglected • addicted to alcohol or drugs • contemplated or attempted suicide • emotionally and behaviorally disturbed • lived in several different families or institutions THE FAMILY • single parents • psychiatric illness • personal or marital problems • good families with major problems • inter-generational patterns of abuse 1 • minimal or inconsistent paternal involvement • extreme stress due to alcoholism, poverty o r unemployment • parents had similar childhoods and never received treatment Uta Halee's growth has been in response to the growth of the community and the problems inherent in that growth. A 1993 research study by the Nebraska . Department of Education showed: • 21% of high school students carried a weapon during the past 30 days • 35% were in a physical fight during the past 12 months • 24% seriously thought of suicide Other statistics illustrate the severity of the problems Nebraska youth face today. • 7,680 Nebraska children say their parents divorced in 1990 • Although there are 18,698 fewer children in Nebraska than 10 years ago, there are 1,267 more children in out-of-home care.
