Council President Lormong Lo requests a resolution be prepared for the December 23, 1997 City Council Agenda to honor City Attorney, Herbert M. Fitle on his retirement. RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: WHEREAS,Herbert M.Fitle celebrates 50 years of service with the City of Omaha, serving 40 years as the City Attorney; and, WHEREAS, he has served more than a dozen mayors and scores of City Council members and provided legal guidance to all, in the same impartial fashion, which he often described by saying: ''If we're wrong,we're wrong,but we don't try to shade the law one way or another"; and, WHEREAS, Herbert M.Fitle grew up in South Omaha and early in his life worked with his parents in operating a trucking company,and later served in World War II in the European Theatre obtaining the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge; and, WHEREAS,Herbert M.Fitle has held numerous positions within the community such as Commander of American Legion Post 331, charter member of the South Omaha Optimist Club, and many other positions which have served this community; and, WHEREAS, he was honored in 1987 by The National Institute of Municipal Law Officers for his long and distinguished service to municipal law, and he has been designated as a fellow by the Nebraska State Bar Association Foundation; and, WHEREAS,Herbert M.Fitle and his wife Mary Jane Fitle have four children and nine grandchildren who have brought joy and fulfillment to their lives; and, WHEREAS, the City of Omaha, its elected officials and its employees have greatly benefited from his wise and informed counsel during his long and illustrious service; and, WHEREAS, with recognition that this Resolution cannot capture in its few words the value that the City of Omaha has received by Herbert M.Fitle's service as its chief legal officer. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA: THAT,it is the desire of this City Council to recognize the guiding hand and stability that Herbert M.Fitle has given to the City and to honor the many and varied accomplishments, and untold contributions he made during his fifty years of service. THAT,a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the City Council.
