The attached Resolution has been prepared at the request of Council President Frank Brown. This
Memorial Resolution honors Ruth Jackson, who died on October 28, 1998, for her over 21 years of
service to the citizens of the City of Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Ms. Jackson's service
included serving on the Personnel Board and as the Director of the Omaha Human Relations
Department. Ms. Jackson served the citizens with dedication and distinction and she will be missed
by her many relatives, family and friends.
Your favorable consideration of the attached Resolution is respectively requested.

Ms. Ruth Jackson, former City of Omaha Human Relations Director.
The Law Department shall prepare the cover letter and documents and forward to the City
Clerk in time to appear on the Council's agenda for Tuesday, November 10, 1998.
See the attached article. Members of the Human Relations Department may be able to supply
additional information.

RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA:
WHEREAS,on October 28, 1998,Ruth Jackson died in Omaha,Nebraska,at the age
of 75 years; and,
WHEREAS, she was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on December 20, 1923, and was
raised in Clarinda, Iowa; and,
WHEREAS,she began her employment with the City of Omaha in 1964,and in 1977
she was appointed by Mayor Al Veys to serve as the Director of the Omaha Human Relations
Department, giving her the status of the first female to head a City Department; and,
WHEREAS, she retired from the City of Omaha in 1985 but continued her service
when she was appointed to the Personnel Board in 1988 where she served for 5 years; and,
WHEREAS, she loved politics and was a staunch Democrat who believed that for
the Black Race to gain freedom and respect, it was imperative to register and vote, and she was
instrumental in getting thousands of individuals registered to vote and be actively involved in the
political process; and,
WHEREAS, she is survived by her daughter, Carolynn Jackson and son Wilford E.
Jackson, Sr., both of Omaha,Nebraska, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and,
WHEREAS, she will be warmly remembered by her many friends, relatives and
family members; and,
WHEREAS,the City Council, on behalf of the citizens, wish to honor the memory
of Ruth Jackson.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF OMAHA:
