This proposal would simply add an additional alternate member to the City's Zoning Board of Appeals. Under present State law, the Zoning Board of Appeals consists of five regular members, and one alternate. At least four votes are required for the granting of any variance. Frequently, only four members are able to attend a board meeting. This results in frequent requests for layovers, so that a full board would be available to possibly grant the required four votes. It is anticipated that an additional alternate member would reduce layovers and the consequent delays and backlog of cases. The Mayor's office and Planning Department support this request.
