The attached Resolution would rename Grant Street between 24th and 25th to Mildred Brown
Street.
The request for this commemorative naming is because Mrs. Brown was the longtime owner,
editor and publisher of the Omaha Star, a North Omaha newspaper serving the African-American
community. She founded the paper in July 1938, and was active in its management until her
death on November 2, 1989.
After reviewing the request of Marguerita Washington, the Planning Department recommends
approval.

The request for this commemorative naming is because Mrs. Brown was the
longtime owner, editor and publisher of the Omaha Star, a North Omaha
newspaper serving the African-American community. She founded the paper
in July 1938, and was active in its management until her death on
November 2, 1989.
The applicant has agreed to pay for the two signs and a work order has',been
entered onto the record in Traffic Engineering. Please contact Leanne

RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OMAHA:
WHEREAS, it has been determined that it is in the best interest of the City of
Omaha to provide for commemorative street names; and,
WHEREAS, a nomination has been submitted for the designation of "Mildred
Brown Street" as a commemorative street name on Grant Street between North 24th Street west
to North 25th Street; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Brown was the longtime owner, Editor and Publisher of the
Omaha Star, a North Omaha newspaper serving the African-American community which she
founded in July, 1938 and was active in its management until her death on November 2, 1989;
and,
WHEREAS, the Planning Director has recommended that said commemorative
name be granted pursuant to the nomination, a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit "A"
and made a part hereof by this reference.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF OMAHA:
THAT, the nomination of "Mildred Brown Street" as a commemorative street
name on Grant Street between North 24th Street west to North 25th Street is hereby approved and
the Public Works Department is authorized to erect an acceptable sign therefore, in compliance
with all applicable local and state statutes, ordinances or regulations, and policies.
