His Latino Politics course at UNO includes student participation in an interdisciplinary service learning project to address issues of fair housing, immigration, voter participation and social justice issues in the greater Omaha area. He represented the State of Nebraska at the 2002 National Hispanic Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. He recently published a study for OLLAS of Latino political, social and economic conditions in Nebraska. Dr. Benjamin-Alvarado has received numerous grants including: the John Beverly and Elena Diaz-Verson Amos Foundation; The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; The Ford Foundation; The Johns Hopkins University Cuba Exchange Program; and the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia for his work on Cuba. He was formerly a Project Manager for the Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies under the direction of Dr.William Potter. o f; .
