Garcia 816 North 34th st(for 37 years) Omaha, Nebraska razatimes@gmail.com Born in Kansas City in 1945, I am at the age of sixty-five. The father of 2 boys, I have been married to the former Linda Perez for going on 34 years. I lived in the Mexican barrio of the West Side, raised by my paternal Grandmother until I graduated from Manual High Vocational School in 1963. The next three.years I worked for Macy's, Aetna Insurance and finally took a job with Commerce Trust Company as an IDP clerk. At the same time, I attended Metropolitan Junior College, working towards an Associate's Degree in Banking until 1966 when I entered the U.S.Army. After a three year enlistment, part of it in Southeast Asia, I returned to civilian life and began my University training at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where I was awarded a Bachelors Degree in Psychology in 1972. I also involved myself in student government, social and cultural politics and worked 20 hours a week for the United States Postal Department during this time period. Upon graduating, I took a position as a Program Developer with the Kansas Council of Farm Workers and Low Income People, in Garden City, Kansas. Over my one year employment, I was responsible for a quarter of a million dollars worth of Federal funding dollars for a variety of C.A.P. projects in western Kansas. In 1973, I returned to Kansas City, married and began working for the Xerox Corporation, thus beginning a point in my life that was beset by economic and personal occurrences that in 1976 prompted my move from Kansas City to Omaha, Nebraska, on July 4th, 1976. Having divorced my 15t wife, I married the former Linda Perez Rivera and began a series of positions that included the Chicano Awareness Center,Adoptive Hypnosis Center and for a time, when my 15t son was born in 1977, a stay at home Dad. In 1980, I was hired by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, holding a variety of positions to include management until I took a New York Dock buyout in 1992, and left the railroad. Between 1992 and 1997, my wife Linda and I opened an art cultural center on 13th street and because the buyout included a monthly salary for a period of five years, became active promoting arts, history and culture that reflected Chicano Mexican American society and tradition. In 1998,the buyout agreement terminated and I returned to gainful employment with the Union Pacific Railroad after a short Christmas stint with the United States Postal Service. During my tenure beginning as a crew dispatcher, promoted to a manager in 2002, I retired from railroad service in 2007, at the age of 62. Through this period of time I was active in Community activities supporting cultural, artistic and historical venues. ) N `aw 0 3 N N E ` <-3 $@2 ¢ E3 m3 E? os 0 _`S «c} u op E8i °1U 2pom gm ugg 3 S. 0a a c 1 03 go ' 'fig` mo E •a 22 D 5 m ac) fig§ 32 5 § g 2 E',i. Since 1977, I have remained active in promoting and encouraging community cultural arts and historical expression during National Hispanic Month. My wife and I have over the years managed, assessed and maintained a growing collection of images, literature, periodicals, books, artifacts, vintage and historical documents and photographs along with art objects and materials identified as part of the Mexican and Chicano experience of the Americas. Of particular interest welling from my close and personal association with South Omaha, its buildings, people, streets, has been a sentiment for urban settings and the interaction between people and structures. Learning how both have changed and affected each other through the history of the City has been somewhat of a passion. Since I am not a Man of letters, I attended the school of experience by becoming a Board Member of the Douglas County Historical Society to gain insight and experience which has in 2010, resulted in the formation of the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands. Acting as their volunteer Executive Director, MAHSM has become the prime depository of historical • records identified and associated with the history of Mexican American peoples in South Omaha. It is at this vocation that I am involved in daily. I am also a member of the Latino Futuro Fund, the Latino Coalition of Nebraska,a board member of the Literacy Council of Omaha, Nebraska Story Arts, and a long time member of the American G.I. Forum. I have for years shared my knowledge and experience of this City with audiences. I feel that much work needs to be done to initiate preservation activity up and down the 24th street corridor, especially east of 24th&Vinton, and between F and Q streets on 24th st. I lament the fact that the architectural legacy of our City as it relates to the builders that were responsible for both housing and commercial building stock within the neighborhoods and its business/commercial sites is not well understood. And so I end this narrative. I plan to remain active in the historical and cultural life of my City and look forward to the adventures and challenges that lay ahead. Sincerely, Jose' F. Garcia 816 North 34th st(for 37 years) Omaha, Nebraska razatimes(Wgmail.com Born in Kansas City in 1945, I am at the age of sixty-five. The father of 2 boys, I have been married to the former Linda Perez for going on 34 years. I lived in the Mexican barrio of the West Side, raised by my paternal Grandmother until I graduated from Manual High Vocational School in 1963. The next three years I worked for Macy's,Aetna Insurance and finally took a job with Commerce Trust Company as an IDP clerk. In 1973, I returned to Kansas City, married and began working for the Xerox Corporation, thus beginning a point in my life that was beset by economic and personal occurrences that in 1976 prompted my move from Kansas City to Omaha, Nebraska, on July4th, 1976. Havingdivorced my1st wife, I married the former Linda Perez Rivera and began a series of positions that included the Chicano Awareness Center,Adoptive Hypnosis Center and for a time, when my 1st son was born in 1977, a stay at home Dad. Since I am not a Man of letters, I attended the school of experience by becoming a Board Member of the Douglas County Historical Society to gain insight and experience which has in 2010, resulted in the formation of the Mexican American Historical Society,of the Midlands. Acting as their volunteer Executive Director, MAHSM has become the prime depository of historical records identified and associated with the history of Mexican American peoples in South Omaha.
