Dear President Festersen and Council members,
On behalf of Project Extra Mile, a statewide network of commtmity partnerships working to prevent
underage drinking and youth access to alcohol. We wanted to take the opportunity to express our concerns
regarding the city's application for a class I liquor license at the 1-larry A. Koch Trap& Skeet Range
located at Seymour Smith Park.
At a time %%hen Nebraska ranks as the 411' most adult binge drinking state in the nation.Omaha ranks in
the top 20 binge drinking cities nationwide(CDC.2012). and when the city is working diligently to both
address gun-related violence and battle alcohol-related crime, it is concerning that the City of Omaha is
seeking this liquor license. Serving alcohol in a public park Where shooting guns is a central activity
opens the city to liability and poses a serious threat to both public health and public safety.
In a media story earlier this year, manager Billie l3uettgenbach was quoted as saying..There arc over 500
kids in this area that shoot high school trap. and we're running out of room for them to shoot in other
clubs."Omaha Parks. Recreation, and Public Property Director Brook Bench was also quoted. saying
"We really want to encourage getting those tournaments. and those shoots and the youth of today down
here shooting at Seymour Smith and really promoting it." Providing alcohol at a facility such as this
makes it less youth-friendly, sends mixed messages to youth and adults about alcohol and firearms and
increases youth access to alcohol.
We appreciate your consideration of our concerns regarding the city's liquor license application for a city-
owned park and shooting range. As you move tbrward, we ask you to give thoughtful consideration to
this application and to the potential impact on Omaha's youth and families, and to the landscape of our
neighborhoods and communities.
If you would like additional information. please do not hesitate to contact me at(402)963-9047 or via
email at nikki(u)prtyectextramile.org.
Sincerely.
