The classification of Safety Inspector was last reviewed and amended in 2005. The State of Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is implementing new policies and procedures which will impact the city's training and testing processes for city employees who are required to obtain/possess a commercial driver's license (CDL) to perform their duties. Currently, three full-time city employees conduct training and testing for city employees seeking to obtain a CDL. The training, which the city employees conduct in addition to their regular job duties, prepares the trainees to successfully pass the CDL test. A new rule from the DMV stipulates that an individual who conducts training shall not be the same individual to administer the test. As such, while the three city employees can continue to conduct training, the Safety Inspector will conduct the actual test. Due to the heightened level of responsibility and the increase in the minimum number of years of experience required to successfully perform these duties, it is recommended that the position's salary level within the Administrative and Executive (AEC) bargaining unit pay scale be increased from 11 AEC ($44,500.82-$52,928.20) to 15 AEC ($51,556.44-$61,219.86). This amendment was submitted and approved by the City of Omaha Personnel Board at its June 26, 2014 meeting.
